Description

Overview

Finasteride is an oral 5-alpha reductase inhibitor primarily used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, a hormone responsible for hair loss and prostate growth.

Mechanism of Action

Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. Since DHT is the main hormone responsible for hair follicle shrinkage and prostate enlargement, reducing its levels helps:

  • Prevent hair loss and promote regrowth
  • Shrink an enlarged prostate, easing urinary symptoms

Benefits & Indications

  1. Hair Loss Treatment
  • Helps prevent further hair thinning
  • Promotes hair regrowth in some men
  • Works best for early-stage male pattern baldness
  1. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Reduces prostate size
  • Improves urinary flow
  • Decreases frequent urination (especially at night)
  1. Other Uses
  • May be used off-label for hormonal acne and hirsutism (excess hair growth) in women
  • Studied for prostate cancer prevention

Possible Side Effects

  • Sexual dysfunction (low libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased ejaculation volume)
  • Gynecomastia (breast tenderness or enlargement)
  • Depression, anxiety, and mood changes
  • Dizziness and weakness
  • Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS): Rare but long-term sexual and psychological side effects after stopping the drug

Drug Interactions

  • Alpha-blockers (e.g., Tamsulosin): May increase the risk of low blood pressure
  • Testosterone therapy: Reduces effectiveness since TRT increases DHT
  • Herbal supplements (Saw Palmetto): May have additive DHT-lowering effects
