Description
Overview
Finasteride is an oral 5-alpha reductase inhibitor primarily used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by reducing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, a hormone responsible for hair loss and prostate growth.
Mechanism of Action
Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. Since DHT is the main hormone responsible for hair follicle shrinkage and prostate enlargement, reducing its levels helps:
- Prevent hair loss and promote regrowth
- Shrink an enlarged prostate, easing urinary symptoms
Benefits & Indications

- Promotes hair regrowth in some men
- Works best for early-stage male pattern baldness

- Herbal supplements (Saw Palmetto): May have additive DHT-lowering effects
