Description
Overview
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that provides temporary relief from pain by numbing the affected area. The 5% ointment formulation is commonly used for neuropathic pain, postherpetic neuralgia, and localized skin irritation.
Mechanism of Action
Lidocaine blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells, preventing the transmission of pain signals to the brain. This results in localized numbness and pain relief without affecting deeper tissues.
Benefits and Indications
• Postherpetic neuralgia – Commonly prescribed for nerve pain following shingles.
• Minor burns and abrasions – Provides relief from skin irritation and mild burns.
• Injection site pain relief – Used as a topical anesthetic before injections.
• Neuropathic pain relief – Beneficial for diabetic neuropathy and other chronic nerve pain conditions.
Possible Side Effects
• Skin reactions – Redness, irritation, or burning sensation.
• Systemic absorption (if overused) – Dizziness, confusion, irregular heart rate, or seizures (rare).
• Allergic reactions – Rash, itching, or anaphylaxis in rare cases.
