Description
Overview
Meloxicam is a prescription NSAID primarily used for pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Unlike ibuprofen or naproxen, meloxicam is a selective COX-2 inhibitor, meaning it has a lower risk of causing stomach ulcers while still providing effective pain relief.
Mechanism of Action
Meloxicam inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme more selectively than traditional NSAIDs, reducing prostaglandin production responsible for pain and inflammation. While it still has some COX-1 inhibition, it is generally gentler on the stomach than ibuprofen or naproxen.
